Should I Have a Spousal Rider?
2011 May 4
No. Most spousal riders cease to exist when the primary insured’s policy expires, lapses, or when death benefits are paid. This is why Dave does not recommend spousal riders as part of a family’s life insurance plan. There are typically no cost savings, and most policies still require the spouse to go through a medical exam and underwriting. In the event of death or divorce, the spouse really has no protection at the time when they need it most. A spouse should have their own individual policy in place.
